Fertility, Prenatal & Postpartum

Trying to conceive, preparing for birth, and recovering after having a baby can bring a lot of changes to your body...

Some are expected, while others can leave you wondering whether what you're experiencing is simply something you have to live with. You don't have to wait until you're in significant pain or struggling with your day-to-day activities to seek support. Pelvic health physiotherapy and acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be used throughout the fertility, prenatal, and postpartum journey to help you feel more comfortable, confident, and connected to your body.

Fertility

Trying to conceive can be an emotional and physically demanding experience, particularly when the journey isn't going as expected. While fertility care often involves medical treatment, supportive therapies can also play a role in helping you feel your best throughout the process.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can help address pelvic pain, muscle tension, discomfort with intercourse, and other physical concerns that may affect your comfort and quality of life while trying to conceive.

Acupuncture and TCM treatment may be used to support reproductive health and overall wellbeing, including supporting egg and sperm health and promoting balance within endocrine (hormone) system, . Acupuncture can also be incorporated into IVF care, including protocols around embryo transfer at the Regional Fertility Program.

Prenatal

Pregnancy brings constant changes as your body adapts to support your growing baby. These changes can contribute to aches, pains, pressure, and changes in how you move.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can help you navigate these changes and prepare your body for birth. Treatment may address common concerns such as pelvic or lower back pain, hip discomfort, pelvic pressure, bladder leakage, abdominal changes, and difficulty staying comfortable during everyday activities or exercise. Your physiotherapist can also help you learn how to coordinate and relax your pelvic floor muscles, maintain strength throughout pregnancy, and modify activities as your body changes. Physiotherapist led labour and delivery prep can help you and your support person feel more prepared, confident and empowered about the birth process as you approach your due date.

Acupuncture and TCM can also provide supportive care during pregnancy. Treatment may be used to help manage common pregnancy-related symptoms such as nausea, headaches, aches and pains, and general discomfort. In some cases, acupuncture and moxibustion may also be used to support a baby moving from a breech position. As you approach your due date, treatment can focus on helping you prepare physically and feel supported as you get ready for labour and delivery. Your practitioner will adapt treatment to your stage of pregnancy and individual needs.

Postpartum

Having a baby is a major physical change, and recovery doesn't end when your baby arrives. Whether you've had a vaginal birth or C-section, your body has been through a lot and deserves time, attention, and support.

Postpartum pelvic health physiotherapy can help with concerns such as bladder leakage, pelvic pressure or heaviness, pelvic or vaginal discomfort, pain with intercourse, abdominal weakness or separation, and ongoing back or pelvic pain. It can also help you gradually rebuild strength and confidence as you return to exercise, work, and the activities you enjoy.

Your first few months with a new baby can involve a lot of lifting, feeding, carrying, and awkward positions. These demands can contribute to neck, shoulder, back, and pelvic discomfort. A physiotherapist can help you understand what your body needs and develop a gradual plan for getting stronger and more active.

Acupuncture, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), serves as a valuable support postpartum, aiding in physical recovery, emotional well-being, and overall health. It has been observed to regulate hormones, stabilizing mood, reducing postpartum depression, and promoting lactation. Improved circulation supports healing, alleviates pain and fatigue, and enhances tissue repair after childbirth. Postpartum treatment often focuses on replenishing energy (Qi), strengthening resilience, and addressing concerns such as insomnia, anxiety, and digestive disturbances. By promoting overall balance in the body, acupuncture helps new mothers recover more smoothly, leaving them feeling physically and emotionally revitalized.
