Dry needling IMS treatment

IMS/Dry Needling

Offered by all physiotherapists & acupuncturist

IMS (intramuscular stimulation, also know as dry needling) is a versatile treatment option for chronic pain, new injuries, and neuropathic pain. When nerves become compressed or irritated, they can cause an exaggerated pain response, leading to pain even without visible inflammation or tissue damage.

A thin, sterile, filiform needle is used to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular and connective tissues.

Benefits of IMS:

  • IMS can effectively address chronic muscle shortening, often caused by overactive muscles due to irritated nerves. This can lead to muscle spasms, tendon strain, joint stress, and increased wear and tear.

  • By using a fine needle to stimulate the muscle, IMS sends a signal through the nerves to help "reset" the system. I can improve the health and function of muscles, connective and neural tissues and improve communication between central and peripheral nervous systems.

Is IMS painful?

The level of discomfort experienced during IMS can vary depending on the treatment area and the duration of the existing pain, which affects tissue sensitivity. Typically, the sensation is minimal, often described as the muscle 'grabbing.' If you have concerns about pain, please inform your therapist so they can adjust accordingly.
