Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
Pelvic Health Physiotherapy (also known as pelvic floor physio) can help treat pelvic floor dysfunction.
The muscles of the pelvic floor attach to the front, back and sides of the pelvis and act like a hammock to support the bladder, bowel and uterus. Like any other muscle in the body, the pelvic floor muscles can become tight, weak, hypersensitive, and uncoordinated. When this happens it can affect bladder, bowel and sexual function and may cause pain or discomfort.
What our pelvic health physiotherapists treat:
-
Bladder (incontinence, urgency, incomplete voiding, etc.)
-
Bowel (fecal incontinence, constipation, etc.)
-
Pain (pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, coccyx/tailbone pain, etc.)
-
Sexual health (Pain with intercourse, etc.)
-
Perinatal (prenatal, pregnancy, and postpartum care)
-
Post-surgery (Hysterectomy, prolapse repair etc.)
Your journey begins with an initial assessment with one of our pelvic health physiotherapists. This assessment and all subsequent visits will take place in one of our private rooms. The assessment typically include a detailed history about your current symptoms, relevant medical information, and a physical assessment (often includes an internal pelvic exam). Based on this assessment, a customized treatment plan is designed specifically for you.
This treatment plan may include:
-
Patient education
-
Stretching and strengthening
-
Manual therapy techniques
-
Lifestyle and behavioural changes
-
Pain control techniques
-
A home exercise program
-
Labour and delivery prep
-
Referral to other healthcare practitioners as needed
All of our pelvic health physiotherapists are trained and registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta to perform internal pelvic exams for the purpose of assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor.
Your physio will ask for your consent prior to any assessment or treatment and you can always withdraw your consent at any time. Your privacy and comfort is our number one priority.
